Question of Back Payments Raised as Top Court Annuls Pension Cut

Ljubljana, 19 March (STA) - The Constitutional Court has annulled provisions of the 2012 omnibus austerity act which cut the pensions of some 26,000 retirees, but it is now unclear how those affected can claim back the money they lost in the interim period.

The Office of the Human Rights Ombudsman, which requested the constitutional review, noted that the legislator would have to come up with a solution for the seven-month period, from 1 June until the court's decision, in which the cuts were in effect.

Those who appealed decisions by the Pension and Disability Insurance Institute (ZPIZ) have a legal avenue open, but the others will have to wait for an appropriate law to be adopted.
