Ombudsman Wonders in Report If Slovenia Still Has Rule of Law

The parliamentary Petitions, Human Rights and Equal Opportunities Commission discussed on Friday the 2009 ombudsman's human rights, in which Ombudsman dr. Zdenka Cebasek - Travnik wonders whether Slovenia is still a social state and whether it is governed by the rule of law.

In the presentation of the report, dr. Cebasek - Travnik pointed to inadequate work of inspection services, the failure to aid the disabled, and violations of the rights of workers, especially of foreign migrant workers whose employers do not settle their workers' pension and disability insurance contributions.

She pointed out that state institutions often fail to respond to warnings about human rights' violations and that the government is looking for excuses for bad inspection services in claiming they are understaffed.

The deputies sitting on the commission pointed to a great number of issues which they see as the most problematic and sent the ombudsman's recommendations to the National Assembly, supplemented with a number of its own recommendations.
