The parliamentary Petitions, Human Rights and Equal Opportunities Commission has urged the relevant institutions at all levels to respect the recommendations from the 2010 report of the human rights ombudsman, especially those concerning the elimination of violations of the labour legislation.

Presenting the report to the committee on Friday, Ombudsman dr. Zdenka Cebasek - Travnik said that the issue of human rights in Slovenia was turning into a supervision issue.

"Supervision does not work or it works poorly," she said, adding that the workers were being exploited also with the assistance from he state, "which has failed to adequately amend the legislation."

Dr. Cebasek - Travnik also pointed to the absence of a law dealing with long-term care and the issue of children without medical insurance. She would also like to see the mental health care act amended.

According to the ombudsman, there is a constant gap between her and the government's views on human rights. The government gets information based on certain indicators, while the ombudsman is informed on the basis of concrete individual initiatives.
