Ombudsman to Help Roma Secure More Transparent Funding

Human Rights Ombudsman dr. Zdenka Cebasek Travnik met Roma officials on Monday, announcing that she would pressure for regulations that would make money earmarked for the Roma community accessible to all Roma in Slovenia.

In their first official meeting the ombudsman and the Council of the Roma Community pointed to problems due to lack of clarity and transparency in the financing of the Roma community. They discussed the Council's activities and the participation of various Roma groups in it, but found that the biggest problem was the question of autonomy in the distribution of funds, with the lack of transparency causing disagreements among the Roma.

Ombudsman agreed that the legal framework for the financing of the Roma community in Slovenia was deficient. She plans to propose to the authorities to adopt measures and regulations that would increase the community's autonomy in the use of funds and would secure access to the funds to all Roma.
