MPs Endorse Ombudsman's Recommendations

The MPs endorsed the recommendations of Human Rights Ombudsman dr. Zdenka Cebasek - Travnik to institutions and officials in her 2009 report, which focuses on violations of labour legislation and lack of inspections.

The report also points to the problems of non-payment of welfare and insurance contributions by employers, workplace mobbing and the growth of various forms of informal economy.

Presenting the report in the National Assembly on Friday, ombudsman dr. Cebasek - Travnik said that a better work of inspection services is necessary, and wondered whether the state wanted to have good inspection services at all. She also voiced criticism of legislative procedures.

The ombudsman believes that the state is not responsive enough to the needs of individuals such as senior citizens, disabled, children with special needs, as well as the poor. She also pointed to the inadequate housing policy, which puts young families at disadvantage.

The MPs discussed the report on Friday, paying particular attention to violations of worker's rights and the issue of equal opportunities. The coalition deputies pointed to a series of government measures aimed at improving the well-being of people in time of economic crisis.

The opposition meanwhile wondered whether Slovenia was still a welfare state, as an increasing number of individuals are unable to gain access to goods which should be available to all.
