Increasing Number of Tax-Related Cases

The Slovene Ombudsman, Ivan Bizjak, urged for finding a final solution to the issue of mass graves of those who were killed after WW II by communists, stressed that the law on the fund to pay war damages should be passed as soon as possible and explained that the largest amounts of cases he gets are related to taxes. Bizjak, who spoke to the press on Tuesday to present his recent activities, said that in the January-to-October period 2,752 complaints were filed with his office, up 1.4 percent from a year earlier.

As to the mass graves, at least all major mass graves should be marked and symbolical burials carried out. Also a list of all those were killed by communists after WWII should be compiled, which would also serve issuing death certificates. The ombudsman said that the procedures that would result in making amends for the post-war killings are being carried out too slowly. He therefore urged relevant bodies to pass a law on war mass graves which is currently in parliamentary procedure soon.

Bizjak told the press that the number of cases regarding taxes has been increasing on a yearly basis, which in his view has been expected and is normal since the situation is similar abroad.
