Ombudsman Peter Svetina today opened a photo exhibition of the Sožitje Association on the premises of the institution. "Thank you for giving the Ombudsman the opportunity to enjoy your creativity," Svetina thanked Branka Perne, a representative of the association, and Aleš Zupan, a representative of all the participating photographers.
On this occasion, the representative of the association said that the association strived to raise public awareness of what people with intellectual disabilities can do with appropriate support and dispel the majority public perception that they are incapable of doing anything. "Ingrained notions about people with various disabilities need to be persistently dispelled. For this reason, in 2018 Sožitje formed a commission for cultural activities and used art as a medium to show people what people with intellectual disabilities are capable of," added Perne. Aleš, who has been expressing himself through photography for many years and is also a member of an association of photographers, said that he preferred to shoot celebrations in the special social care and employment centre where he lives.
The Human Rights Ombudsman also noted the importance of an inclusive society and expressed the expectation that the institution of the Ombudsman would also host future exhibitions of the Sožitje Association.
